Alpaca Basics Workshop
If you are considering purchasing Alpacas or are just curious about what is involved in owning alpacas this workshop is for you! This is a realistic and practical approach to alpaca ownership. The workshop is designed to educate both the new Alpaca owner or the prospective Alpaca owner. Make an informed decision on whether owning Alpacas is right for you before you purchase. If you have already purchased, use this class as a reference on how to best care for your Alpacas. The Alpaca Basic workshop provides you the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of alpaca ownership from experienced breeders and fiber herd owners. This is your opportunity to learn the facts about owning alpacas and disregard the fiction.
Some of the topics covered will be:
-a brief history of alpacas and their origin,
-Alpaca registry
- What’s your reason for owning alpacas
Breeding/showing /sales
Fiber herd / fiber processing
Pets
-Alpacas/Fiber as a revenue stream
- what to look for when purchasing an alpaca
-shelter/fencing requirements
-proper nutrition/feed requirements
-herd health / vaccinations /illnesses /shearing
--Diane Rico of Nature Mirror Studio will share how she maintains a small alpaca herd and incorporates the herds fiber into her artistic creations.
The first 2 hours of the class will be in the classroom but we will then transfer to the barn and pastures with the alpacas, giveing you a hands on opportunity with some of our herd. We will discuss care and nutrition requirements, proper handling technniques, and shelters and fencing.
This is a rain or shine event. You will be out in the barns and pastures so dress appropriately. Closed toe shoes required!
